Because very few stock forums that were popular at that time had any credibility for the members sharing information, Gerard built his forum around a rating system similar to eBay: members of the portal were able to see by rank, status, and comments, who was an amateur and who was a stock-picking guru. Gerard quickly became one of the top stock-picking gurus on this forum, with tens of thousands of members. The website was ranked in the top 50,000 websites by Alexa and as the forum grew, so did Gerard’s reputation.
In 2005, Gerard started getting contacted by publicly-traded companies looking to receive investor awareness based on his research abilities and passion for journalism. Gerard sold the forum in 2006 to start his own investor relations and financial marketing company on the web, Wall Street Grand.

Philanthropy is just not about donating money, but about solving problems. The idea of writing a check and calling it “philanthropy” is extremely short-sighted and unfortunately, all too common.
Instead, philanthropists should think like entrepreneurs, and see social challenges as an opportunity to create large enterprises. It’s easy to create a $1 billion company – you just have to solve a $10 billion problem. Many of these large $10 to $100 billion problems happen to be social problems. That’s why I think that some of the largest opportunities that exist for an entrepreneur are in solving humanity’s grand challenges.
