Unwritten Rules of Storytelling

Unwritten Rules of Storytelling

How will you tell your story to others? How will you use your past in a way that engages and excites?

Use this post with the intent to grow in your mindset and to perfect how you communicate with others.

The way you deliver your stories genuinely matters. Talk from your heart — the more you do this, the more comfortable you become relating to others and speaking sincerely.

Be yourself. No, really. Open up and be authentic — this is your game changer. This is how you will attract an authentic tribe of like-minded people. If you pretend to be someone other than your true self, eventually your audience will see through that, and your success will be short-lived, not to mention you will not enjoy what you are doing.

Storytelling is one of the most unbelievable skills that you can master. It can help you attain what you desire in multiple ways. From business to building social currency.

Now it’s time to practice for yourself. Find an inspiring workspace and practice telling your story. Follow the actions below to achieve real, relatable results.

Step 1: Write it Out.

Write out your story. How did you get to where you are today? Practice telling it from an authentic place.

  • Calm yourself
  • Type or write down your story
  • Repeat
  • Read, practice, and focus on your main points

Share stories that:

  • Include other people in them
  • Instances that you have experienced in your own life that you overcame
  • Could resonate with someone in the situation that you were once in

Step 2: The Power of Language

  • Your words are the most powerful tools you have
  • Don’t criticize others; instead, offer to give tips to enhance someone’s life
  • Don’t use the word “but” — it cancels everything you said previously
  • Instead, use “and” or “even though,” or simply pause

Your language is powerful! It influences others. Be cognizant of what and how you talk.

Step 3: Act it Out

  • Practice telling your story out loud.
  • Be mindful of saying “but,” “umm,” or “like”
  • If you get stuck, simply pause and take a deep breath
  • Use your body to project energy into your story

Enhance your story with body language, tone, and volume. Energy is infectious.

Leverage your:

  • The tone and pitch of your voice
  • Body language
  • Speak to your audience, not above them

Step 4: Master Your Personal Narrative

Create your origin story. Your story is one of the most important things you could master. If you can tell it the right way, people will begin to tell it for you.

Three key points to focus on when mastering your narrative and building an origin story:

  • The Situation: What’s your beginning part of your story? Where does it start?
  • The Action: What was the action that you took? What was that pivotal moment in your life?
  • The Results: What were the results you had? What did you learn? What did you achieve?

Storytelling alone can be the reason why you become an influencer because people love and buy into stories. It is one of the most valuable skills you could ever develop, as you build your brand. A lot goes into sharing a captivating story, but don’t let that paralyze you from getting started. Start where you are and perfect over time.
